Five Locals Taken in USHL Phase I Draft

(NNCNOW.com) --- Five Northlanders and a University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) recruit were among those taken on Monday evening in Phase I of the 2014 United States Hockey League (USHL) draft, in which guys born in 1998 were eligible to be selected.

Blaine's Riley Tufte, a UMD commit, was the first overall selection by Fargo. Grand Rapids' Mitchell Mattson followed him in the first round, going ninth overall to Bloomington.

Below is a list of all the Northland players, plus Tufte, to be taken in Phase I of the USHL draft. Phase II, in which players of any age can be taken, is scheduled to start at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

1. Riley Tufte (Blaine) --- Fargo
9. Mitchell Mattson (Grand Rapids) --- Bloomington
106. John Stampohar (Grand Rapids) --- Dubuque
108. Ash Altmann (Duluth East) --- Sioux Falls
109. Luke Dow (Duluth Marsahll) -- Sioux City
117. Cole Koepke (Hermantown) --- Chicago
