St. Paul, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Hermantown senior forward Chris Benson was named on Saturday the 2013 recipient of the Class A Herb Brooks Award, given out each year to a player in the state tournament who best exemplifies the values exhibited by the late coach.
Benson scored the first Hermantown goal on Saturday in the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Class A championship, with the Hawks eventually falling 5-4 in that game against St. Thomas Academy.
He finished the tournament with three goals and two assists for the Hawks, with that team finishing as runners-up for a fourth straight year.
Characteristics needed to be a Herb Brooks Award winner are passion, commitment, courage, and leadership. Benson becomes the third Hermantown player to win the award, with the others being Chad Huttel in 2007 and Karl Gilbert in 2006.
