Hayward second at golf regional

In girls high school golf on Wednesday, three Northland teams advanced to next week's Division Two section meet. The Hayward Hurricanes, who hosted the D-2 regional at Hayward golf and tennis club, finished 22 strokes behind the Eau Claire Regis. Northwestern finished third, while Spooner was fourth.

Hayward's Emilee McCusker was the top Northlander, as she fired an 86 to finish tied for second. Northwestern senior Hayley Botten ended with a 91, good enough for ninth place. Erin Winesburg led Spooner with a 101for 18th place.

The section meet will be on Tuesday in Somerset. The top two teams and three individuals advance to state. Hayward finished third at state in Division Two last season.

In the Division One regional in New Richmond, Superior's Allison Gotelaere was the top individual qualifier with a 94, tied for seventh. River Falls won the team title with a 372, while Superior finished sixth.
