Minneapolis, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Alex Illikainen scored 31 points on Wednesday afternoon, but he and the Grand Rapids boys' basketball team fell 69-52 to #3-seeded Marshall in the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Class AAA quarterfinals at Williams Arena in Minneapolis.
The Tigers used stingy defense and a full-court press for much of the first half to disrupt the Thunderhawks' rhythm, with Marshall jumping to a 10-point lead at halftime.
Grand Rapids came out strong from the break, getting within five points of Marshall about midway through the second half. Marshall, though, hit a couple timely three-pointers down the stretch to again pull away.
Riley Sharbono was the Tigers' leading scorer, finishing with 18 points, and Aaron Mathiowetz added 14 in the win.
A.J. Watland scored nine points for the Thunderhawks in the losing effort, and Sam Smorkrovich finished with eight in the game.
Grand Rapids was making its sixth straight appearance in the Class AAA tourney and ends the year with an overall record of (20-10).
