Brooklyn Park, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Board of Directors voted unanimously on Monday morning to approve a drastic change to the regular season scheduling process for the state's high school football teams, moving in 2015 to what's called a district-based schedule.
The new strategy separates schools into districts made up of at least 10 teams based on school size, geography, “like schools” and strength of programs.
The schools in each district will draw their eight-game regular season schedule from teams within their district, with the only exception coming if a district contains an odd number of schools.
Nearly every 11-man school in the Northland will play in what's called the Northeast District, with the only exception being Duluth East as part of the North Central District. Every area 9-man school, meanwhile, will play as part of the North District.

The move was based on complaints from some of the state's athletics directors that it was growing more and more difficult to fill out an eight-game schedule and that teams were having to travel too far to play games.
The new district-based scheduling process will begin in the 2015 season and will not affect the postseason, which will continue on in section format that is currently in place.
Districts will be realigned every two years to make adjustments for enrollment changes, changes in nine-man teams, changes in cooperative programs, changes due to programs being dropped, and school consolidations.
