Northland swimmers qualify for state

(Hibbing, Coon Rapids) - Solveig Viren, a freshman from Grand Rapids capped off a big week at the Section 7A girls swimming and diving meet in Hibbing, by qualifying for state in four events on Saturday.

Viren won both the 50 and 100 yard freestyle races. She also was a member of the Thunderhawks 200 yard freestyle relay which won their race, and the 200 medley relay which finished second.

Hibbing's Michelle Patregnani qualified in three events, winning the 100 yard breaststroke, the 500 freestyle, and as a member of the Blue Jackets winning 200 yard medley relay.

Other qualifiers in Class A include a trio of Two Harbors members winning events. Rebecca Ronning took the diving competition, Brooke Fletcher in the 200 yard freestyle, and Stephanie McGregor in the 200 yard individual medley.

Hibbing won the team title, while Grand Rapids finished second.

At the Section 7AA meet in Coon Rapids on Saturday, Duluth East's Emily Punyko qualified in both the 50 yard freestyle, and 100 yard breaststroke events. The Greyhounds also had relays earn trips to state in the 200 yard medley, and the 400 yard freestyle. Additional qualifiers from Duluth East include Elizabeth Reed in the 500 yard freestyle, and Alissa Marlow in the 100 yard freestyle.
