Proctor's Welch Commits to Division I UofM

Proctor, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Proctor senior runner Matt Welch signed his national letter of intent on Friday afternoon to run Division I cross country for the University of Minnesota, where he was also compete in indoor and outdoor track and field.

Welch won the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Class A individual state championship in 2012, that after winning his second Section 7A title during his senior season.

The Rails senior will receive a partial athletic scholarship to attend the University of Minnesota, and he said Friday he plans to redshirt during his first year with the Golden Gophers.

Welch was also honored on Friday by Gatorade in being named the Minnesota male runner of the year, an award that was selected from both Class A and Class AA runners in the state.

He said Friday he plans to study education at the University of Minnesota with a minor in coaching.
