Grand Rapids, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- John Rothstein has been officially hired as the new Grand Rapids boys' hockey head coach, the school's athletic director Anne Campbell confirmed to NNCNOW.com on Friday afternoon.

Rothstein, a native of Grand Rapids, Minn., played for the Thunderhawks in the late 1970s, helping the team to three state tournament appearances (1972, 1974, 1975) and one state championship (1975).

After high school, he went on to play four seasons at the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) where he accumulated 56 goals and 69 assists in 143 games played.

Rothstein served this past season as an assistant coach for the Thunderhawks and takes over for Bruce LaRoque, who resigned his post earlier this month after 14 seasons.
