Superior, WI (Northland's NewsCenter) --- The student body at Superior high school sent two of its spring sports off to the state tournament Thursday morning.

The boys golf team will compete at state June 6 and 7 after placing second at this week's sectional meet in Wausau.

Meanwhile, track athletes Shane Holmes and Raya Kosey will be representing the Spartans in the state meet for the second consecutive year.

Kosey will compete in the long jump and the 400 meter run, while Holmes will compete in the 1600 meter run.

Both were at the state meet a year ago, but they said they are excited for another challenge in 2011.

"This year was a good year, maybe even a little harder than last because now I know my potential," Holmes said. "I was so nervous going into state last year, but now I know that I've got to step it up."

"It was a surprise for the long jump, that's for sure," Kosey said. "The 400 I've been doing for a couple years, so I was pretty sure I was going to go to state in the 400."

Even with all that experience, Kosey said the atmosphere at state will be tough to deal with.

"It's weird as you get older, you don't feel the nerves," Kosey said. "I wasn't nervous at all at sectionals, but at the state meet, with all those people there, I might get a little nervous. We'll see how it goes."

The MSHSL Class AA golf tournament is set for June 14-16 at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan, MN.
