Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- The first rolls of turf on the football went in on Wednesday at the new football and soccer field at the NBC Sports Complex at Superior High School, and on Thursday crews were making their way toward what will be the football 50-yard line.

The complex will also include a new all-turf baseball field, multipurpose track, grandstands, press box, and concession stand when it's completed, which is hoped to be before the scheduled grand opening on Aug. 29.

With outside donations added to the initial investment of $4 million, school officials estimate the total price tag for the project has gone up to nearly $5 million, with baseball field lights being the last thing needing funding.

"It's worth it seeing the kids come through and look at this project every day, seeing the excitement that they have," Superior athletics director Ray Kosey said. "Alumni are coming back and saying, 'Geez, well why didn't you have this when I played here?' So there's a lot of positive energy in Superior right now."

The plan right now is for the boys' soccer team to play an afternoon game on the new turf on Aug. 29 before the football team has its 2014 home opener that night.
