WIAA Girls' XC to Change to 5-Kilometers

May 16, 2014 Updated May 16, 2014 at 10:04 PM CDT

Stevens Point, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Board of Control has voted to increase the length of girls' cross country races from four kilometers to five kilometers, it was announced on Friday.

The change was sparked by a letter received from the Office of Civil Rights complaining about the difference in distance for boys and girls --- boys' races are currently run at the five kilometer distance.

The change for WIAA girls' cross country races will take effect in the 2014-15 athletic year.
