Minneapolis, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Matt Cassel has been named the Minnesota Vikings starting quarterback for week one of the regular season against St. Louis, first-year head coach Mike Zimmer officially announced on Monday afternoon.
The move was not unexpected as Cassel came into training camp as the number one quarterback, and he never seemed to relinquish that title to either rookie Teddy Bridgewater or former starter Christian Ponder.
"Matt did not do anything to lose the job this preseason," Zimmer said. "I think he's played great. The team has a lot of confidence in him. They feel good about his veteran leadership and presence."
Cassel started nine games for Minnesota in 2013, throwing for 1,807 yards and 11 touchdowns while leading the team to a (5-4) record.
