Minneapolis, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Former Minnesota Vikings offensive lineman Matt Birk has been named the NFL's director of football development, the league announced on Thursday afternoon.

In that role, Birk will be responsible for helping to develop the game for players, coaches, and front office personnel, and he will also assist in the administration of game-day operations for the NFL.

"I'm very excited to begin this next chapter of my football career," Birk said. "It's a real honor for me to be entrusted with developing the game in so many different ways."

Birk was drafted by Minnesota in the sixth round of the 1998 NFL Draft, and he went on to play for the Vikings from 1998-2008. After that, he played four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and helped that team win Super Bowl XLVII.
