Des Moines, IA (NNCNOW.com) --- Duluth native Kara Goucher finished fifth at the women's 10,000-meter event at the U.S. Track and Field Championships on Thursday night while her training partner Shalane Flanagan won the event in Des Moines, Iowa.
Goucher finished the race in 32 minutes, 59.23 seconds while Olympic medalist Flanagan had a winning time of 31:43.20. The two are training partners in Portland, Ore.
The top three finishers are eligible to qualify for the American team at the World Championships 10K on Aug. 11 in Moscow. Flanagan automatically earned a spot while the second and third place finishers must run a qualifying time of 32:05 or faster by July 20 to do so.
If runner-up Jordan Hasay and third-place finisher Tara Erdmann are unable to do so, then either Goucher or fourth-place Amy Hastings could still make the team.
