St. Paul Native Viola into Platform Diving Semis

London, England (Northland's NewsCenter) --- Minnesota native Brittany Viola put together five solid dives on Thursday, advancing to the semifinals of the women's 10-meter platform event at the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games.

Viola finished the qualifying round in 14th place with 322.55 points, nearly 70 points off the pace of the top overall qualifier in China's Chen Ruolin.

The St. Paul, Minn. native is the daughter of former Minnesota Twins pitcher and 1987 World Series MVP Frank Viola, and she is making her first-ever appearance at the Olympic Games.

United States diver Katie Bell also qualified for the event semifinals, finishing the opening round in ninth place. The semifinals are set for August 9 at 4:00 a.m. CT and the finals August 9 at 1:00 p.m. CT.
