Minneapolis, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The Minnesota Vikings declined to pick up the fifth-year option on 2011 first-round pick and quarterback Christian Ponder before Saturday's midnight deadline, the team announced on Saturday afternoon.

After this season, Ponder will be a free agent. Ponder told ESPN's Ben Goessling on Wednesday that the team hadn't talked to him about picking up the option.

The Vikings re-signed quarterback Matt Cassel in the offseason, and he's expected to be the team's starter this fall.
