Vikings' Peterson Won't Play Sunday in Finale

December 28, 2013 Updated Dec 28, 2013 at 5:39 PM CST

Minneapolis, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson will not play in Sunday's regular season finale against the Detroit Lions, head coach Leslie Frazier officially announced on Saturday.

Peterson will miss his second game this season, this one as he continues to recover from foot and groin injuries that have hampered him much of this season.

The reigning NFL Most Valuable Player currently ranks third in the NFL this season with 1,266 rushing yards, adding 10 rushing touchdowns and one receiving score for the Vikings.

Primary backup Toby Gerhart was ruled out earlier this week for Minnesota, which means Matt Asiata will likely be in line for his second start of the season.
