August 12, 2012 Updated Aug 12, 2012 at 1:26 PM CST

Mankato, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has been taken off the active physically unable to perform (PUP) list, the team announced on Sunday.

The move comes just two days after the team's preseason opener against San Francisco, and it now frees the running back to start working out with coaches and teammates on the field.

Peterson had surgery this past December to repair a torn ACL and MCL in his left knee, that after rushing for 970 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2012 before sustaining the injury.

Minnesota head coach Leslie Frazier said Sunday the team will remain cautious with Peterson, who is not permitted by league rules to practice in pads until he has been off the PUP list for two team practices.
