St. Paul, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The Wild have agreed to terms on a two-year contract with defenseman Keith Ballard, the team announced via Twitter on Thursday, worth $3 million, officially signing with Minnesota on Friday.
Ballard, a former University of Minnesota star, was let go by Vancouver this week. The 30-year-old had just two assists in 36 games with the Canucks last season.
“I think first and foremost the decision yesterday came down to a hockey decision,” Ballard said. “I was looking for a fresh start; a new opportunity."
After the Wild let go of defenseman Tom Gilbert on Wednesday, Ballard looks to take his spot.
Minnesota will also part ways with center Matt Cullen who will become a free agent tonight when the market opens at 11 a.m. CT. Cullen scored 33 goals and 101 points in 193 games with the Wild.
