Wild Place Defenseman Gilbert on Waivers

St. Paul, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The Minnesota Wild placed defenseman Tom Gilbert on waivers on Wednesday afternoon in order to give him his unconditional release, the team's general manager Chuck Fletcher announced.

If he clears waivers, Minnesota will use a compliance buy-out to free up some cap space before free agency opens on July 5.

As allowed by the NHL's Collective Bargaining Agreement, Gilbert will be bought out and become an unrestricted free agent on Friday. He then could sign with any team in the NHL aside from Minnesota.

Each NHL team has two compliance buyouts to use over the next two offseasons to adjust to the changing salary cap.

Gilbert racked up 18 points in 634 games with Minnesota after coming to the Wild in a trade for Nick Schultz on Feb. 27, 2012.
