London, England (Northland's NewsCenter) --- Wisconsin native Michael McPhail lost a shootoff on Friday in the qualification round of the 50-meter men's rifle prone, becoming the first person left out of that event's final at the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games.

McPhail posted an original score of 595, tied with eight other shooters in the preliminary round. In the subsequent shootoff, McPhail's score of 51.3 was just shy of the 51.6 turned in by Croatia's Bojan Durkovic.

Durkovic turned out to be the eighth place finisher in the qualification round, meaning McPhail was the highest scorer not to qualify for the medal round.

The Darlington, Wis. native was making his first-ever Olympic appearance, that after winning a gold medal at the 2011 Pan American Games in the 50-meter rifle prone.
