Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- Three former members of the Duluth Huskies are rostered on MLB teams for the opening of the 2012 season, which officially started on March 28.
Drew Smyly, who played for the Huskies in 2009, has been named to the starting pitching rotation for the Detroit Tigers and is expected to make his major league debut sometime next week.
Mark Melacon, who was with Duluth in the 2004 season, is expected to be one of the top relief pitchers for Boston, which acquired him this offseason in a trade with Houston.
Fernando Rodriguez, who played for the Huskies in 2003, hopes to stick in the big leagues this season with Houston after spending most of his time in the minors a year ago.
In all, 30 former Northwoods League players will begin the season on MLB clubs, including new Minnesota Twins outfielder Josh Willingham, who played for Austin from 1998-99.
