Wrenshall Wrens Off To State

By KBJR News 1

The Wrenshall girls' basketball team is heading to the state tournament for the first time in history.

Dave Anderson was there for the send off.

"I graduated in 67 and my wife graduated in 64. 63! I got that wrong. I usually get her birthday wrong, too."

Glenn and Laurel Olson are Wrenshall Wrens from way back.

40 years after graduation, they're back in their alma mater's gym to support their daughter Katie who is a cheerleader for the girls' basketball team.

They're about to take their first trip to the state tournament.

The girls' credit team work for their success.

"Oh man, we've played together since we were in sixth grade and never apart anytime we play basketball; in the summer, spring or anytime, we're always together."

This wasn't the only pep rally send off for a state bound girls' basketball team.

Down the road in Barnum, the Bombers prepped for the trip as well.

Coaches of both teams hope they face each other in the tournament if all goes well.

"That would be the ultimate goal of ours and I was talking to the Barnum coaches and they say the same thing. That would be great to have two polar league teams play for the state championship."

Wrenshall's self proclaimed "largest fan" Glenn Olson thinks a match up like that would be a close battle.

"They beat us in their home court but I think we have a good chance of beating them. We have a good chance of going all the way."

Win or lose, the Wrens want to thank their fans and families for a season of support.

"This is the most community support I've ever seen. It's awesome. It counts in here and it makes us want to go farther to know we have that many people to support us."

In Wrenshall, Dave Anderson, the Northland's News Center.

Congratulations to both the Wrens and the Bombers for making the state girls' basketball tourney.
