Marshall, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- The #2-ranked University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) football team opened the 2012 season with a win on Thursday night, beating Southwest Minnesota State by a 45-20 final score.
Senior quarterback Chase Vogler survived a somewhat unsettling start to the game for the UMD offense, finishing 17-of-29 passing for 243 yards and two touchdowns.
He was aided on the offensive side by freshman running back Logan Lauters, who finished the game with nine carries for 104 yards and a score.
Sophomore running back Austin Sikorski also found the end zone twice for the Bulldogs, finishing with 12 carries for 57 carries in the contest.
Willow River native and UMD junior linebacker Nate Zuk led the Bulldogs defense with seven tackles, with three players right behind him with six.
UMD is now (1-0) this season and will open the home portion of its schedule on September 8 against Winona State at 6:00 p.m. All home games this season can be seen on live television in the Northland on the My 9 Sports Network.
