Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) football team and first year head coach Curt Wiese opened up their 2013 season tonight with the team's first practice at Malosky Stadium.

The Bulldogs will be led by someone other than Bob Nielson this season. Wiese took over after Nielson left to be the head coach at Western Illinois University.

UMD welcomed 106 players into camp tonight including 18 of 22 starters from last season as the five-time defending Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) champions.

Wiese said it's a different feeling coming into the stadium as the team's head coach.

"It feels a little different, a little more pressure, but in the same sense, we're still coaching football," Wiese said. "We're still in a good place. It's been a long off-season so our guys are excited to get back on the field. Meetings this afternoon went well, and we'll find out."

UMD will also look to replace the holes left by linemen Garth Heikkinen and Jake Bscherer and the program's all-time winningest quarterback Chase Vogler.

The Bulldogs open up their season at home on September 7 against the University of Sioux Falls.
