Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) softball team will officially retire Mandy Matula's No. 14 jersey this spring, making her the first UMD Division II athlete to be honored in this fashion.

Matula died last spring at the age of 24. She played with the Bulldogs from 2007-08 to 2010-11 as a starting pitcher and utility player.

She finished her time at UMD with a .304 lifetime batting average and posted an 11-9 record in 31 career pitching appearances.

In addition, the team will also wear No. 14 decals and patches on their uniforms and batting helmets during the 2014 season.
