Lake Placid, NY (Northland's NewsCenter) --- Duluth native and future UMD Bulldogs defenseman Andy Welinski was one of 34 players named to the final camp roster at the 2012 USA Hockey National Junior Evaluation Camp, it was announced on Tuesday.
Those 34 players were selected from an initial pool of 45, and they will remain in competition for a spot on the U.S. National Junior team that will take part in the 2012 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championships.
Welinski helped the Green Bay Gamblers this season to a league-best regular season record at (47-9-4) and the United States Hockey League (USHL) postseason championship. He tallied 15 goals and 22 assists this season for the Green Bay, with that goal total ranking first among USHL defenseman.
The Duluth native was named earlier this year as both the USHL defenseman of the year and by USA Hockey as the national junior player of the year.
Welinski was in 2011 was a third round pick of Anaheim in the NHL Entry Draft, and he is expected to join the roster of the UMD Bulldogs starting in the 2012-13 season.
