Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Outgoing University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) senior offensive lineman Garth Heikkinen has received a single-season school-record sixth All-American honor, the latest coming Friday with a selection to Don Hansen's first team.
The sixth All-American citation following the 2012 season breaks the old mark of five, set by former Bulldogs running back Isaac Odim after the 2009 year.
Heikkinen's 11 overall All-American honors and eight first-team selections are also UMD football program records.
The Duluth, Minn. native has been a staple on the offensive line during his four years at UMD, starting a school-record 54 straight games and helping the team to an overall record of (47-7).
In 2012, Heikkinen was one of five senior captains during a season in which the team posted a program-record 46.5 points per game.
The senior is the Bulldogs' first-four time all-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference honoree, being named three times to the first team (2010-12) and once being given honorable mention (2009).
He was also named the 2012 recipient of the Gene Upshaw Award, which is given out each year to the best lineman in Division II. For that, he also gets a chance to play in the 88th annual East-West Shrine Game, which is set for Jan. 19 in St. Petersburg, Fla.
