Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Caleb Herbert arrived with a bang his freshman year at the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD), totaling 14 goals and 19 assists to finish fourth on the team with 33 points. Now, he's a junior and somewhat of a grizzled veteran for the Bulldogs.

"Coming back this year as an upperclassmen, it feels good to have that confidence," Herbert said. "You can naturally be more of a leader and go into each game with that mindset. It's been going good so far."

It's been going so far this season for Herbert with a couple different line mates. Most recently, he's been paired with Justin Crandall and Kyle Osterberg.

"Those are two guys who bring a lot of energy to the game," Herbert said. "They're fun to play with. They chase pucks down and create turnovers, and that's how scoring chances are going to be created. They're fun."

"He's one of the most skilled players I've ever played with," UMD junior forward Justin Crandall said. "He has a knack for finding the right places and getting open. He's so fast and skilled that it makes it easy for a guy like me to find him, and if you give him opportunities, he is going to score."

And he has done that. Herbert had two goals and three assists through 10 games this season, marking production that he and his coaches expected early in the year.

"His play this year is much, much better than it was last year early in the year," head coach Scott Sandelin said. "He's got a lot of confidence and he's been one of our best players for these three or four weeks, and we need him to be. He's a junior. He's a guy we count on offensively."

"I feel I've found a bit more of a groove here as opposed to last year when I thought I was on my heels a bit," Herbert said. "I've been getting opportunities every game, which is what I'm worried about more than points, and the team is playing well. I'm excited for the rest of the year."
