St. Paul, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The No. 1 Minnesota men's hockey team capitalized on its first two shootout attempts while the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) failed to convert as the Gophers beat the Bulldogs in the first ever North Star College Cup.

The Bulldogs were down a goal early until Caleb Herbert answered 18 second later. Austin Farley put UMD ahead 21 seconds later to make it 2-1 in the first period before the Gophers tied it at 2-2.

It was still tied in the third before both teams exchanged a pair of goals. Farley got his second goal of the night and with just over two minutes left in the game, senior captain Joe Basaraba forced overtime with the game tied at 4-4.

UMD (10-9-3) will travel to Western Michigan next weekend to take on the Broncos.
