Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- The St. Scholastica and UMD volleyball teams each earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) team academic award for the 2011-12 season, it was announced on Friday.
For the Saints, it's the third straight year earning the AVCA award, which is honors teams that display excellence in the classroom by maintaining a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average.
St. Scholastica also qualified for its first-ever Division III NCAA tournament this past season, finishing the year with a (27-7) overall record.
The Bulldogs, meanwhile, also earned the AVCA award this year after seven team members were named in December to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) all-academic team.
Recent UMD graduate Allison Fanta was among the team's leaders in the classroom, finishing her collegiate career with a 3.97 grade-point average as a business management major.
The Bulldogs qualified for the Division II NCAA tournament in the 2011-12 season, finishing the year with a (28-4) overall record.
