UMD Scores Early, Upsets No. 2 Notre Dame

Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The University of Minnesota-Duluth men's hockey team scored three first period goals en route to handing second-ranked Notre Dame its first loss of the season 4-1 on Saturday night at AMSOIL Arena.

Joe Basaraba got the Bulldogs on the score sheet with his goal in the first period. Just nine seconds later, Caleb Herbert scored his first goal of the season. Then, Duluth, Minn. native Dominic Toninato made it 3-0 in favor of UMD with his first collegiate goal.

In the second period, Kyle Osterberg stretch the UMD lead to four goals before Notre Dame spoiled senior goaltender Aaron Crandall's bid for a shutout with a power-play goal in the third.

Crandall, who made his third consecutive start, finished with 20 saves and improved to 2-1 on the year.

UMD travel to Columbus, Ohio next weekend for a pair of non-conference matchups with Ohio State University.
