UMD Trio Named Hobey Baker Candidates

Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Three players from the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) men's hockey team have been named candidates for the 2014 Hobey Baker Memorial Award, which will be handed out this April to the most outstanding player in NCAA Division I men's hockey.

UMD forwards Tony Cameranesi and Caleb Herbert along with defenseman Andy Welinski are all on the initial list of 68 players up for the award, which has been won by a Bulldogs player five times in its 33-year history.

Herbert, a junior from Bloomington, Minn., has been the most statistically productive amongst those three, having totaled four goals and nine assists this season for 13 total points.

Cameranesi, a sophomore from Plymouth, Minn., is not far back of his teammate with two goals and eight assists so far this year for 10 total points.

Welinski, meanwhile, is a sophomore from Duluth, Minn. that has been a staple on the blue line this winter while also producing two goals and seven assists for nine total points.

The first phase of fan voting of the this year's award began on Tuesday morning and will continue through March 9. Fans interested in casting a vote can visit the official Hobey Baker Memorial Award web site.
