Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The top eight athletes in each event at this week's NCAA Division II outdoor track and field championships will be named an All-American, and University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) junior Dan Nielsen hopes he will be one to earn that distinction.

"I keep thinking it every time I go to bed," Nielsen said. "I don't really know what to say. I'm hoping to get in that top eight, and if I am there it'll be a great end to the season."

Nielsen is the lone male athlete UMD is sending to the NCAAs and will be competing in the steeplechase, with this marking his first-ever taste of national competition.

The NCAA Division II outdoor track and field championships are set to run Thursday through Saturday in Allendale, Mich.
