Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The University of Minnesota Duluth men's hockey team will be one of four teams competing in this weekend's first-ever North Star College Cup in St. Paul along with Minnesota State-Mankato, Minnesota, and St. Cloud State.

Bemidji State is the odd man out this year but will rotate in next year. The trophy was unveiled this week and was made out of a red oak tree from Glen Skrove Farm in Mora, Minn.

"Anytime there is something on the line, we expect to go in there and win it," UMD junior defenseman Derik Johnson said. "It's a new tradition, but I think it's going to last a long time and the popularity of the event is just going to go up from there."

"They're all really fun teams to play," Bulldogs freshman defenseman Willie Raskob said. "It's kind of an interstate battle, and we get to see who's the best."

The Bulldogs will take on the Mavericks on Friday at 4:00 p.m. at the Xcel Energy Center while the Gophers and Huskies face off at 7:00 p.m.
