Fort Wayne, IN (NNCNOW.com) --- Former University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) defenseman Drew Olson has signed with Fort Wayne of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), the team announced on Tuesday evening.
Olson was originally selected in the fourth round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets, and he made his professional debut this past April with Peoria of the American Hockey League (AHL).
"Drew will be one of the best skating d-men in the league this year," Fort Wayne head coach Gary Graham said. "He got a lot of ice time for a top program at UMD and brings a physical approach to his game. He competes hard and is physical at the point of attack constantly. We are happy he chose Fort Wayne."
The 23-year-old Olson played four seasons with the Bulldogs, totaling three goals and 18 assists in 147 games while also helping UMD to the 2011 NCAA Division I championship.
