Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Karen Stromme has been named the interim atheltic director at the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD), moving up from her position as assistant athletic director.
The announcement was made Friday afternoon, just two days after
former UMD athletic director Bob Nielson resigned to take the head football coaching position at Western Illinois University (WIU).
Stromme has served as assistant athletic director since 2003 and has significant committee work within Division II, including this past November being elected vice-chair of the NCAA Division II Management Council.
She spent 21 years as head women's basketball coach at UMD, compliling an overall record of (440-184) and still holding the best winning percentage in program history.
Stromme never had a losing record during her time with the Bulldogs, leading UMD to 12 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) titles, eight NCAA regional tournaments, and seven appearances in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics tournament.
UMD will begin immediately a national search for a new athletic director, and school officials expect the job to filled by sometime this spring.
