Virginia, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Virginia, Minn. native and former University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) defenseman Matt Niskanen will become an unrestricted free agent at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, and his agent says plenty of teams are lining up to try and sign him.
"They're all trying to sign a top four defenseman," Neil Sheehy told KFAN Radio on Monday morning, "and there aren't a lot of those available. I think Matt Niskanen is the premier defenseman in the free agent market."
Niskanen had a monster year this past winter for the Pittsburgh Penguins, totaling 10 goals and 36 assists in 81 regular season games while also adding two goals and seven assists in 13 postseason contests.
Sheehy went on to tell KFAN Radio on Monday that he's confident he can negotiate a maximum-length contract for Niskanen under the new collective bargaining agreement.
“I don’t think there’s any question I can get a seven-year contract for Matt," Sheehy said.
