Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- During practice for the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) football team, freshman running back Logan Lauters can be seen in the maroon number seven jersey. In games, he wears the much more talked about number 11.

"I didn't choose it. I asked for a smaller jersey, and it ended up being number 11," Lauters said. "It's all right. It's just a number."

It is just a number, but the last time that particular uniform was on the field for UMD, it was on the shoulders of the school's all-time leading rusher, Isaac Odim.

That's a little fact with which Lauters' teammates have already had some fun in this 2012 season.

"I reminded him about that, just a couple jokes," UMD senior quarterback Chase Vogler said. "He's taken it head-on, and he's a pretty humble kid. I think he's pretty excited to wear that number, and I think he'll do well in it."

"I'm sure he knows and that he's thought about it," Bulldogs sophomore running back Austin Sikorski said. "Obviously Isaac was a great back, and no can replace him, but [Logan] will do his best job."

One game into his freshman season, that's already true for Lauters. With just nine carries in the 2012 season opener, he gained 104 yards and scored a touchdown for UMD.

Still, that humility shines through.

"We have five or six running backs that can all do the same thing," Lauters said of his performance. "It was just nice to get the carries and the touches that I did. We're all pretty good guys together, and we all have really similar talent. It doesn't really matter who we have back there."

His teammates agree, but they did say Lauters has a bright future in the Bulldogs number 11 jersey.

"He's a good back. He's a young guy, very strong," Sikorski said. "He knows what he's doing and is still kind of picking up on some things. He's going to be a good talent when he gets older."
