Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- UMD senior captain Jack Connolly and his family depart on Thursday for Tampa ahead of Friday evening's announcement of the 2012 Hobey Baker award winner, given annually to the best player in men's college hockey.
Connolly finished his career eighth on UMD's all-time career scoring list with 197 points and was named this season the Western Collegiate Hockey Association player of the year.
After playing in a school-record 166 consecutive games, Connolly is now vying to become UMD's fifth-ever Hobey Baker winner. He would join Tom Kurvers, Bill Watson, Chris Marinucci, and Junior Lessard as Bulldogs to have won the prestigious award.
The Duluth native is part of the Hobey Hat Trick, along with Maine's Spencer Abott and Colgate's Austin Smith.
UMD senior Travis Oleksuk and sophomore J.T. Brown were both named in the top 30 for this year's award.
The 2012 Hobey Baker award will be presented at 5:00 p.m. CST on Friday night from MacDill Air Force base in Tampa, FL.
