Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- Two UW-Superior baseball players and the Yellowjackets head coach will be part of the United States team this summer that will embark on a 10-day trip to Costa Rica, it was announced over the weekend.
Spooner, Wis. native Sam Holden will join teammate Matt Vold and head coach Nick Bursik on the trip, all picked as NCAA Division III representatives for Team USA after their success in the 2014 season.
Holden was second on the Yellowjackets this spring with 25 runs batted in and ranked third with 41 hits, and he also made just one error in 280 chances at first base for UW-Superior.
Vold, meanwhile, also finished tied for third on the team with 41 hits and was in the team's top five offensive producers with 22 runs batted in.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for Sam and Matt and very well-deserved based on the seasons they had this spring," Bursik said. "Not only do they get to continue to play baseball against elite competition, but they will also get the opportunity to see what international baseball is all about. It should be a lot of fun and I know that both of them are already looking forward to it."
Bursik, who was in his first spring as UW-Superior's head coach, will also get a chance to be with the United States team as part of the coaching staff.
"For me, I'm excited to have the chance to get a taste of international baseball as well as share the dugout with some great coaches and players. As a coach, you're always looking for chances to gain knowledge from others in the coaching ranks and this trip will provide that to me."
The trip will begin on June 26 and will include seven games across 10 days for Team USA, with opponents that include the Costa Rican National Team, the Moyogalpa All-Stars, Alta Garcia, the Nicaraguan Baseball Academy, and the Nicaraguan Pro Team.
