Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- The UW-Superior men's soccer team has been picked third in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) preseason poll of league head coaches and sports information directors, which was released on Tuesday afternoon.
The Yellowjackets were (12-6-3) overall last season and (2-1-1) against conference opponents, and the team also won the first-ever WIAC postseason tournament championship.
This will be the final season UW-Superior competes in the WIAC, and head coach Joe Mooney thinks an appropriate way to go out is as conference champions.
"No matter how many chances we've had at it, I think to end everything on a win would be pretty spectacular," Mooney said, "but I don't think we want to get ahead of ourselves at all. There are obviously four very good teams we have to get through first and then a tournament to follow things up after the season. We've got our work cut out for us, and we know it."
Forward Brian Grand returns as a senior for UW-Superior this fall after leading the conference with nine goals and seven assists for 25 total points, and goalkeeper Matt Elder will also be a senior after he topped the league with an .840 saves percentage in 2013.
UW-Superior has amassed 36 victories over the past three seasons, which is the best three-year stretch in program history. This year's team will open up play Aug. 29 against Elmhurst.
