Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- The University of Wisconsin-Superior (UWS) officially became the newest member of the "You Can Play" project and just the first university in Wisconsin to join the program on Thursday at luncheon.

Nearly 200 people joined as Yellowjackets Athletics Director Steve Nelson led the audience with an emotional speech.

"I'm very proud of these young people and extremely proud to be a Yellowjacket today," Nelson said.

The program is a nationwide initiative dedicated to ensuring equality, respect, and safety for all athletes without regard to sexual orientation.

Guests also included Derek Schell who is the first openly gay men's basketball player to compete at the Division II level along with Scott Copper who played two seasons at Augsburg College as an openly gay member of the Auggie football team.

Over 70 student-athletes and coaches alike joined to confirm their pledge. To view the full video,
