Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) men's hockey team held its first official practice on Saturday, just six days before the Bulldogs open up at home against former WCHA rival Michigan Tech.

This season marks the first since 1965 that UMD is in a conference other than the WCHA. The Bulldogs will compete this season a member of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC).

For UMD head coach Scott Sandelin, there's nothing quite like hockey season.

"Yeah, it's always fun. September gets to be a long month for our guys, and they want to get going. We all want to get going with official practices. When October starts to come around, it's hockey season. I know our guys are excited to get going as well as the coaching staff."

The Bulldogs will host Lakehead University on Monday night in an exhibition. Game time is set for 7:07 p.m.
