Hibbing, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The city of Hibbing will officially take control of the Hibbing Raceway on Thursday morning, taking over for St. Louis County in owning one of the area's premier dirt track racetracks.

The transfer was finalized earlier this year and was made with the idea that the city has a better chance to lengthen the lease agreement with the Iron Range Raceway Association (IRRA) and use the space as an entertainment venue.

"The racetrack is an important part of our community," Hibbing Mayor Rick Canneta said. "We are excited by the opportunities we now have moving forward and look forward to playing a more active role in promoting the Hibbing Raceway."

The deal includes the city taking control of the 19.5-acre plot the raceway sits on, and St. Louis County will also provide $250,000 in economic development funds to be used at the site.

The 2014 season opener at Hibbing Raceway is scheduled for May 17 at 6:00 p.m.
