Ely Falls to Underwood in State Semifinals

Minneapolis, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The Ely football team trailed Underwood 21-7 at halftime but made a run at the Rockets in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to seven before falling 34-20 in the 9-man state semifinals on Thursday at the Metrodome.

Mark Heiman got the scoring started for the Timberwolves in the first quarter with a 27-yard score. The Rocket answered with 21 straight points before Louis Gerzin cut the gap to 21-14 after a 75-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Then in the fourth, Sean Jordan threw a 15-yard score to Michael Lah to narrow the deficit to 27-20, but Underwood scored a touchdown late to pull ahead for good. Noah Thompson led the Rockets with 31 carries for 183 yards and three touchdowns.

Ely finishes the season (12-1). Gerzin racked up 157 yards on 25 carries for the Timberwolves.
