Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Former University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) women's hockey player Caroline Ouellette is trading her skates for skis, and on those skis she's headed with 52 others right now the magnetic North Pole.
According to The Canadian Press, Ouellette, a four-time Olympic gold medalist, is joining her Canadian national teammate Genevieve Lacasse and several wounded Canadian soldiers on the more than 75-mile trek that started on Tuesday.
The trip is a fundraising event for True Patriot Love, which is an organization that provides physical and mental support to injured Canadian military personnel. The goal for the trip was $1.5 million, according to The Canadian Press, and nearly $1.4 million has already been raised.
Ouellette played four seasons with UMD from 2002-05, totaling 97 goals and 92 assists in that time and helping the Bulldogs win the 2002 and 2003 NCAA Division I championships.
She also has four Olympic gold medals with the Canadian national team, having won the gold in every Olympic Games since 2000.
