Esko, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The Floodwood football team earned its first ever trip to the state tournament on Wednesday night after running over South Ridge 37-20 thanks to strong defensive play in the second half at Les Knuti Field in Esko.

Evan Suonvieri played a big role for the Polar Bears on offense including two third quarter scores that put the game out of reach for the defending champs of Section 5 9-man.

Floodwood will face Ely in the state quarterfinals on Friday, Nov. 8 at 7:00 p.m. at Public Schools Stadium.
