Duluth, MN (NNCOW.com) --- Duluth, Minn. native Dom Toninato will suit up as a freshman forward this winter for the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) men's hockey team, but he won't be the first in his family to play for the Bulldogs.

Jim Toninato, Dom's father, played four seasons with the Bulldogs from 1982-86 and finished with 19 goals and 35 assists in his career.

Now, the younger Toninato is prepared to carry on his father's legacy. His first chance came this past Monday, when he scored two goals in UMD's exhibition win over Lakehead University.

"It was definitely something special and something I've dreamed about," Toninato said. "Growing up in Duluth and going to all the games as a kid made that something special. It's something I'll never forget."

UMD will open the regular season Oct. 11-12 at home against Michigan Tech, with both games set to start at 7:07 p.m. and be broadcast live on the My 9 Sports Network.
