Hermantown, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- Hermantown native and former UMD Bulldogs defenseman Chad Huttel signed on Monday a contract to play the 2012-13 season with Texas in the Central Hockey League (CHL).
That means he won't be returning to England and the Sheffield Steelers of the Elite Ice Hockey League, where he spent the 2011-12 season after graduating from UMD.
"As a hockey player, I got better every day," Huttel said of his time with Sheffield. "I got a lot of ice time, so it was a great experience for me to take a new step as a player. To be in the lineup every night, it was a great experience."
Huttel played in 53 games for the Steelers in 2011-12, totaling three goals and 13 assists in that time.
During his four seasons at UMD, Huttel tallied two goals and seven assists while appearing in 85 games. He was also part of the program's first-ever NCAA national championship in 2011.
Huttel also captained the 2007 Hermantown boys' hockey team, which went undefeated and won the only MSHSL Class A state championship in program history.
Texas finished the 2011-12 season with an overall record of (33-25-8) and advanced to the conference finals.
